Building A Remote Monitoring System (RMS) For Telecom Networks With Open-Source Tools

Unlocking the Power of Open-Source RMS for Telecom Networks.

Modern open-source tools for remote monitoring and control offer new methods of managing telecom power, security, and environmental infrastructure. These systems unify data from a range of equipment, enabling a single means of overseeing diverse sites, from large data centers to small cell sites in a single system. The example features listed below depend on what equipment you have in your sites currently. For example, we can create a network overview of IP camera data if IP cameras are deployed, but what data can be represented is dependent on the equipment in your network. In most telecom networks, however, there is an abundance of valuable data waiting to be utilized without the need to add additional site equipment.

Below are examples of the types of data gathered from existing equipment in many networks.

Power Management

  • Generator Backup Power: Fuel level monitoring, fuel theft detection, generator battery state of charge, remote generator control (ATS), generator capacity planning, and site life extension by alternating generators with back-up batteries.
  • Battery Monitoring: Thermal runaway detection, health degradation alerts and reports, charge cycle anomalies, battery dimensioning, battery autonomy calculations, missing batteries, peak-shaving/load-shedding.
  • Smart PDUs: Per-outlet power usage tracking, anomaly detection, capacity planning, and remote circuit reboot.
  • Rectifiers & Inverters: Utilization tracking, fault detection, and inverter status monitoring.
  • Smart Meters: Energy efficiency analysis, cost allocation, and irregular consumption alerts.
  • UPS Systems: Battery failure, capacity overload, power fluctuations, energy efficiency analysis, preventive maintenance scheduling, and compliance monitoring.

Environmental Control

  • HVAC/CRAC/Free Cooling Systems: Duty cycle monitoring, historical/predictive maintenance, automated set-point control for energy efficiency, compliance and capacity planning.
  • Temperature & Humidity: Site-wide temperature trends, efficiency optimization, and 2D/3D environmental mapping.
  • Fire Protection & Flood Detection: Real-time monitoring of fire suppression systems and liquid ingress detection.

Security & Access Control

  • Video Surveillance & Access Control Systems: AI-powered IP camera anomaly detection, access-log correlation, tailgating alerts, remote access control, and common event logs between video and access control systems.
  • System Consolidation: Unify fire detection, access control, and surveillance into a single management view, reducing costs and improving response times.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Enhanced logging for security and operational audits.

New open-source tools are enabling greater features than were available in the past. I wanted to list features to give an idea of the scope of these new features. I'll write another article shortly outlining the benefits of these new systems to users, which is where these systems really get interesting.
